Teaching methods
Methods & Practice

Based on classroom teaching in this course is given priority to, other teaching way is complementary methods. The course has 36 hours, we usually use 28 hours for classroom teaching and 8 hours for practice teaching. The arrangement of this course is as following:

Classroom teaching:

All the basic theory and concepts are introduced inclassroom. The course focuses on the optical fiber, transmitter/receiver and system and network, it covers the basic theory, key technologies, principles of system and network architecture of optical communication, including the transmission theory of optical fiber, principle of laser diode, photonicdetector, optical amplifier, WDM system, and optical network.

Experiment demonstration:

A basic fiber communication system. It includes laser, modulator, electrical signal, standard single mode fiber(SSMF), optical amplifier (EDFA), dispersion compensation fiber(DCF),optical attenuator, PD and other testing instruments. The students can learn some knowledge like modulation, attenuation, amplifier, dispersion, nonlinear effects ect.

Fiber fusion experiment.It can help student understanding fiber structure and mastering fusion technologies.

Visible light communication system demonstration. It includes a driving circuit board, LED, PIN, receiving circuit board and some testing instruments. The experiment can help student understanding basic theory and characters of VLC system.

Simulation platform:

We prepare 2 simulating platforms from our research projects. One is Matlab based optical fiber communication system simulating platform, which can help student practicing optical fiber transmission system.By adjusting some parameters of the system, the students can observe signal quality (power, wavelength, spectrum, eye-diagram, bit error rate). Another is NS3-based optical networking simulation platform. The student can use this platform to learn optical networking like traffic management, routing algorithm, buffer, SDN etc.
